Azolla is a charming addition to any pond, but if left unchecked it can become invasive.
In agriculture, the plant is the aquatic equivalent of alfalfa – it is able to fix nitrogen efficiently and in quantity and because of this has been used as a fertilizer, an animal feed, and as a means to remove excess nutrients from polluted water.
