Antique variety. 'Phoebus' is a superb choice for those with small ponds or container water gardens. It is vigorous, but small, and has waxy mottled pads with ruddy orange flowers. Like most of the antique varieties, this lily is rarely found beyond Le Temple-sur-Lot.
Phoebus is a Greek word for Apollo, god of the sun, but Latour-Marliac named it after Victor Hugo's character Phoebus de Châteaupers from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Around the same time Latour-Marliac created a lily he called 'Esmeralda', after the character Phoebus saves from Quasimodo.
Plant one per 14L planting container at a depth of 20 to 40 cm in order to have approximately one square metre of surface coverage after a year or two.
